He was the first to figure out &#8220;sling shot assist&#8221; which is a way to gain more speed to a space vehicle by using close approaches to other planets and then use their gravity to &#8220;pull&#8221; in your vehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"903\" height=\"884\" src=\"http:\/\/mgg.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/image-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-374\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mgg.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/image-1.png 903w, https:\/\/mgg.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/image-1-300x294.png 300w, https:\/\/mgg.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/image-1-768x752.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 903px) 100vw, 903px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The reason why the trip to Mercury will take seven years is that it will have to make  one flyby of Earth, two flybys of Venus and six flybys of Mercury before gravity capture at Mercury for the final and most interesting part of the mission.
